Another groundbreaking activist-artist at the forefront of ethical porn, Shine Louise Houston quit her day job back in 2004 to start her own production company and helm her very first short porn film “The Crash Pad”. That short film became the calling card for a whole series of queer-centered, consent-first short porn films that is still going strong.
CrashPad now showcases over 385 episodes and exclusive behind the scenes interviews, creating a space where LGBTQ+ adult film performers can share their sexuality in an environment that is inclusive, professional, and fun. The site offers content labels for viewers on any potentially triggering consensual-non-consent scenes, as well as behind-the-scenes interviews, so you can be reassured that everyone is 1000% on board with whatever they’re performing.
The site also offers some thoughtful curated collections of its episodes – Currently a “Black and Brown” playlist helps queer folx of color find themselves and their communities represented on-screen, whilst a queer “vanilla” collection gives a safe landing space for those who would rather have clothed, romantic, non-penetrative, or sensually-focused films. This last is a real gift for viewers who for various reasons (assault survivors, those with body dysmorphia, vaginismus, or simply personal taste) want sensuality without the hardcore. And as Crashpad puts it, “what counts as “sex” is as varied as the performers themselves”. Here at ForPlay Films, we love that all definitions of sex are valid at CrashPad, as long as everyone involved in performing and filming says a big hell-yes.
In 2022, after 15 years of directing, Shine has handed the role of director to Ava LaPrima. We can’t wait to see how the site evolves from here!

Fourchamberedheart
Artistic, abstract, conceptual, intellectual, and adamantly defying and deconstructing all these things at the same time, FourChamberedHeart is steeped in art-school and semiotics and produces films with fierce intellectual and artistic integrity.
Headed by performer and self-taught filmmaker Vex Ashley and their anonymous partner out of the North in the UK, the project remains deliberately ambiguous, rejecting labels for both their films and performers, existing in-between genres of both art and pornography and dismissing the need for a definition of either.

A newer company on this list, but one with high ambitions and an earnest mission centered around the notion of holistic wellness, Afterglow aims to make “porn that’s good for you”. Founded by Lilly Sparks in 2020, this company focuses strongly on integrating porn with physical, sexual, and mental health, individual empowerment. Not only does afterglow offer “porn without the ick” but also a welcoming and warm educational bent. Check out their guided masturbations and partner exercises, as well as curated “journeys” of self-discovery.
